Chocolate Chips Cups to Grams
Regular solid chocolate chips use King Arthur's 170 g-per-cup reference; smaller mini chips have their own source-listed cup weight.
Reference measurement
170 grams per US cup
Pour loosely into a dry US cup and level; do not melt or pack.
King Arthur Baking lists 1 cup standard chocolate chips as 170 g. Source note
Mini chips are denser by volume and have a separate listed weight.
Common Chocolate Chips measurements
| US cups | Grams |
|---|---|
| 0.25 US cups | 42.5 grams |
| 0.333 US cups | 56.67 grams |
| 0.5 US cups | 85 grams |
| 0.667 US cups | 113.3 grams |
| 0.75 US cups | 127.5 grams |
| 1 US cup | 170 grams |
| 1.5 US cups | 255 grams |
| 2 US cups | 340 grams |
Practical examples
- 1/2 US cup = 85 grams.
- 1 US tablespoon = 10.63 grams.
- 3 US teaspoons = 10.63 grams.
Measuring note

Mini chips are denser by volume and have a separate listed weight.
Mini chips are a different chart entry, not rounding
King Arthur's ingredient-weight chart lists standard chocolate chips at 170 g per US cup and mini chocolate chips at 177 g per US cup. For three-quarters of a cup, those conventions calculate to 127.5 g and 132.75 g respectively—a 5.25 g difference caused by the named chip size.
If the recipe specifies mini chips, use that subtype's chart or the actual weight. This calculator deliberately follows the regular-chip entry rather than silently switching rates when two bags of chocolate have different chip geometry.
Count the solid pieces before melting them
Pour regular solid chips into a dry measuring cup, level gently and avoid shaking them into tighter gaps. Melting removes those spaces, so a cup of melted chocolate does not represent the same filling method as a cup of dry chips.
If a recipe calls for 1½ cups of standard chips and then says melt them, weigh 255 g of the solid chips first before melting that portion. Chopped chocolate or a differently shaped chip should follow its recipe's separate reference when known.
